Common injuries in DUI Accidents

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can cause significant problems. DUI accidents are usually severe due to the drunk or drugged driver being incoherent at the time. Even if you do not feel anything initially, always go to a hospital for an exam.

In just nine years, almost 4,000 people were in accidents resulting in death due to drunk driving. More often, they result in severe injuries. Here are some examples of DUI-related injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries

A traumatic brain injury results from a violent blow to the head. During a DUI-related accident, it is often the result of impact with the windshield, steering wheel or pavement.

Sometimes these injuries are temporary if the impact is not severe. More often, these injuries result in long-term impairment, disability or death.

Spinal cord injuries

An injury to your spinal cord can result in paralysis, either partial or complete. A severe injury can disrupt your ability to work, stand or even breathe. It can also result in permanent nerve damage.

Organ damage

There are many types of organ damage. You can suffer from:

  • Heart and lung damage from impacting the steering wheel
  • Ruptures of the spleen, liver, kidneys or lungs from a variety of impact points
  • Internal bleeding from ruptures and other organ injuries result from impact with various objects around the vehicle

This is just the beginning of the organ damage that is likely.

Broken Bones

One of the more common injuries is fractures. Your wrists can break from the airbags deploying. Your legs can break if the frame crumples. There are many other scenarios.

If you encounter someone weaving in traffic, it is best to stay far away from them.
